Kata Mijatović, multimedia artist, born in 1956 in Branjina / Croatia. She was a member of art group Swamp / Baranja (1988 – 1991). She studied painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze, and later continued her studies at the Academy of Visual Arts (ALU) in Zagreb where she graduated (1997). She was a member of the artistic council of the Baranja Art Colony / BUK / (2005 – 2010). From 2005 – 2018 she has been running the AŽ Gallery / Ateliers Žitnjak in Zagreb. Since 2007 she has been a member of the PLEH art group. At the 55th Venice Biennale (2013), she participated as a representative of Croatia with the project Between the Heaven and the Earth, curated by Branko Franceschi.
Lives and works in Zagreb as an independent artist. The reconsideration of the relationship between the conscious and unconscious, between the visible outside world and the invisible inner mental spaces is the main topic of Kata Mijatović’s artistic practice. The starting point in her works is the dichotomy between these two psychic spaces, their interaction and the possibility or impossibility of their mutual communication. A particular segment within the framework of these research consists of works / projects with dreams, where the dreams are a basic structural template and motivating content. Dealing with the dream phenomenon, these works problematize the perception of reality in relations conscious-unconscious.
