Unconscious:
Canal Grande

performance, video
55th Venice Biennale
2013,

The content of the recording, captures the ride of a white gondola along the Venetian canals in the early morning hours. Inside the gondola, covered with white sheets, the author sleeps, the gondolier is dressed in black. The video is indirectly linked to the performance Sleeping Between Heaven and Earth, performed in 2010, in which the author slept one night in Ivan Kožarić’s sculpture The Shape of Space (MSU, Zagreb). The shape and white color of the gondola are reminiscent of the rounded form of the sculpture, which is associated with a cradle, a shell. In both cases, the emphasis is on sleep, which takes us into the unconscious. In the video, the sublimation of the unconscious is the water in which Venice is immersed – the City of the Unconscious. The work also contains a reference to the paintings of northern symbolists (Arnold Böcklin and others), who often used the motif of a boat trip as a metaphor for crossing into the other world.

While the video was made in the early hours of the morning, the performance with the same content was performed the following day
